It seems that plenty of Medium writers are aiming for high outputs. Some gurus even tell us the only way to succeed on this platform is to churn out two or three stories a day.
Whatever.
Let them regurgitate the same old thing over and over, just worded differently, while YOU focus on some things that are far more productive than guilting yourself into writing.
Here are 4 things I do to feel better about myself when I don’t want to write:
I take out my recycling. It’s a big deal and I usually procrastinate long enough to build an overflow of recyclables spilling out onto the floor around my bin.
Make my bed. I don’t do this every day because a friend once told me it’s good to let the mattress “air out” once in a while. I feel like that was her way of justifying not making her bed….and I like it.
I add peas to my mac and cheese. Green it up a little. It makes me feel less guilty about eating a bowl full of pure carbs and cheese fat.
Take up smoking. No, I don’t really do that. But I try behaving like a smoker who isn’t allowed to smoke in my own house, and take a 10 minute break away from my screen. I go outside for my break.
Today I was out on my balcony taking that little break and what did I see? A full grown buck walking in the grass not more than 50 feet away from me. And I don’t even live in the forest, I live in the city.
It changed my entire perspective for the time I watched him nibble on the grass and then jump a 6-foot fence to disappear out of sight. The experience was FAR more zen than writing, believe me.
What are some things you do to step away from writing and take a break?
Below are my two latest curations in case you’re looking for inspiration. Both were based on really small personal experiences that I was able turn into curatable stories. For me, literally everything is a story!
In relationships - Investing In Love.
Any past relationship should never be seen as time wasted. It’s always worth the investment.
In business - Customer service isn’t just a department.
An eye-opening look at one really amazing and one really shitty customer service experience. Both in the same day.
Thanks for reading, and see you Medium!
