Medium is like a never ending game for us writers. We write, publish, wait, and then…..
It sucks, we all feel it. That’s literally my face every time I see, “Not distributed in topics.” Especially because I was curated right out of the gate in my Medium journey. My third story ever written on Medium was curated so I thought,
“Hey! This is pretty easy!”
I think they just do that to keep you spending your $5.00 per month and give you hope that your next curation is just around the corner.
I felt so validated when I was curated that first time because A) It was an incredible, life changing moment that I wrote about, and B) Curation!
But now when I go look back on that story, I see that it’s only EVER received 183 claps, total.
So, what’s the important information I’ve gleaned from that little number of 183? All kinds!! I have realized that curation is NOT the holy grail of Medium. If curation was the ONLY thing that mattered, I’d have far more than 183 claps on that story, after three months.
This proves my point that networking and making yourself known across the platform, is far more important than curation. Sure, curation helps but it’s not everything.
Now, 3 months into my journey, if I wrote and published that exact same article, and it was curated? I’d bet my first born that my claps would skyrocket. Because it would have fanned out to the hundreds of followers I have now. Followers I didn’t have only three days into Medium.
Medium is a long game and I get it….we’re all impatient AF! We want it all and we want it now.
But trust me, it’ll happen if you’re willing to play the long game.
